Summary
The Folder/Cutter Operator will set up and operate a folder machine to automatically fold, slit and score printed sheets into signatures for binding and will perform manual and machine operator tasks on guillotine paper cutter machines. The Folder/Cutter Operator will have a working knowledge of the setup, adjustments, procedures, capabilities, limitations and maintenance of this equipment to perform the full range of standard folding and cutting of printed materials.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Understand the production workflow
- Ensure that QA standards are met
- Load automatic cutting programs into machines
- Operate paper cutter to cut and trim blank stock and printed material that is to be further processed in the Pressroom or Bindery
- On the folder, examine work order to determine setup specifications, insert sample sheet in machine and set guides to edge of sheet
- Set loading table to various cut sheet sizes
- Set folder rollers using paper settings
- Learn barcode workflow and how to keep in sequential order
- Turn screws to regulate tension of creasing blades and calibrate folding rollers according to thickness of paper and size and number of folds specified
- Adjust air blasts on feeder to regulate amount of air separating sheets of paper to provide continuous flow of paper through machine
- Stack sheets to be folded on conveyor belt of automatic feed
- Adjust machine during production run as required
- Jog, stack, band, and box folded sheets
- Deliver folded material to the machine inserters for use in bulk mailings
- Learn the pickup process
- Understand PHI recycling
- Cut covers and letters to specifications
- Maintain all safety and OSHA standards
- Report machine issue utilizing FMX
- Operate productivity level at 65%
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements
Required Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Zero (0) – one (1) years of experience operating guillotine programmable cutter machines (i.e. Polar, Perfecta or Inpro brands) and folders.
- Ability to set up and adjust folders
- Ability to communicate/understand written as well as oral instructions
- Ability to read and interpret written work orders or other job specifications containing bindery
requirements - Ability to read and understand job tickets
- Familiar with different paper weights and sizes
- Ability to understand barcode sort process
- Ability to operate additional bindery equipment a plus
- Basic math skills required
- Basic computer skills

Working Conditions
Must be able to perform the essential job duties. Work may be performed in an office, warehouse and/or manufacturing environment. Requires the ability to perform the following activities for the majority of the day: stand for extended periods of time, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or climb. In addition requires the ability to lift and/or push up to 40 pounds. May be exposed to noise and be required to wear hearing protection for the duration of the shift.
