Summary
The Data Architect is responsible for leading the design, review, and optimization of enterprise data solutions. This role establishes data architecture standards, promotes database design best practices, and provides technical leadership for high-performance relational database environments. The position partners with Engineering and Database Administration teams to deliver scalable, maintainable, and secure data platforms that support business growth.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and review high-performance relational database architectures for enterprise applications.
- Define and promote data modeling standards, architectural patterns, and database design best practices.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure scalability, maintainability, and performance of solutions.
- Partner with Database Administrators to optimize database structures, indexing strategies, and query performance.
- Conduct architectural reviews and identify inefficiencies, anti-patterns, and technical debt.
- Provide guidance on transaction processing, concurrency, locking, and data integrity within OLTP environments.
- Establish standards and governance practices for database development and deployment.
- Support performance troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and remediation of database-related issues.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives involving data integration, reporting, and data warehousing.
- Document architectural decisions, standards, and recommended practices.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field.
- 10+ years of experience designing and implementing relational database solutions.
- Expert-level knowledge of relational databases such as: Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and/or Oracle.
- Strong understanding of OLTP database design principles and performance optimization techniques.
- Experience with data modeling, schema design, query tuning, indexing strategies, and transaction management.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure
- Experience with data warehouse architecture and dimensional modeling.
- Knowledge of ETL/ELT design patterns and data integration architectures.
- Experience with cloud-based database platforms and hybrid architectures.
- Experience creating and enforcing enterprise data standards and governance frameworks.

- Advanced expertise in relational database architecture and data modeling.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Deep understanding of database design patterns, best practices, and anti-patterns.

Working Conditions
Must be able to perform essential job duties. Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Typically requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time (66%+ each workday), hear the telephone, and enter data on a computer and may also require the ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
